Donald Trump Jr. admitted on Sunday that he met with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign after being offered damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Celebrities are now reacting on Twitter to the revelation. See Hollywood stars’ tweets below.
The New York Times reported Sunday that Trump Jr., President Trump’s son-in-law/senior advisor Jared Kushner, and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort met with a Kremlin-connected Russian attorney at Trump Tower in June 2016. Trump Jr. confirmed the report, acknowledging that he took the meeting to obtain damaging information about Clinton. The president’s son said in a statement that he was promised “information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton,” but no such evidence was actually provided. He maintained no wrongdoing and that his father wasn’t aware of the meeting.
The news comes as the Trump campaign is under multiple investigations for possible collusion with Russian officials during the 2016 election. It also marks the first confirmed meeting between a Russian citizen and the Trump campaign. One celebrity weighing in on the controversy is Judd Apatow, who wrote, “Remember when they used to say [not one] of them EVER met with Russians. Who has that montage of lies?” And Michael Ian Black similarly said, “Remember: for months Team Trump denied having anything to do with the Russians… Since then we’ve learned that Team Trump met with EVERY SINGLE RUSSIAN.”
Rob Reiner tweeted, “Coordination, collusion, treason. Whatever you want to call it, the gun just started to smoke. #LockThemUp.” George Takei added, “If these meetings with Russians are so innocent why keep denying they happened?” Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo referenced Trump Jr.’s tweet from last month in which he thanked former FBI Director James Comey for debunking a report about the Trump campaign having Russian contacts. “That didn’t age well,” the actor noted.
Additionally, John Cusack expressed, “I mean – it never ends.” Alyssa Milano cited the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s definition of “collusion.” Cher offered, “Remember who these ppl r. They aren’t us.” And Rosie O’Donnell bluntly stated, “lock junior up.” Gossip Cop will update as more celebrities react to Trump Jr. meeting with a Russian lawyer about Clinton during the 2016 campaign.
