The Internet is abuzz with rumours that Henry Cavill will star as Christian Grey’s rival Jack Hyde in the next Fifty Shades film, Fifty Shades Darker. He might be Superman, but would he really do a good job on Fifty Shades?
Ever since it was confirmed that E.L. James’ second novel in the Fifty Shades franchise, Fifty Shades Darker, would also be brought to life on the big screen, fans across the world have been desperately ploughing the Internet for any Fifty Shades-related scoops before the film’s release in 2017.
Despite overwhelming criticism, both leads Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) and Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) are returning for the second film, the filming date for which will be some point in the new year, Johnson recently revealed. More of a “thriller” than the erotic romance movie we were all expecting, Fifty Shades Darker will also see Christian Grey’s first rival introduced, fellow businessman Jack Hyde.
Hiring Ana in the hope of seducing her, Hyde is a suspicious character, ruthless in getting what he wants and unafraid of using underhand tactics like blackmail in order to get it (aww, and they say romance is dead). But ever since several sources started dropping hints that Superman himself, Henry Cavill, could be in line to play him, we’ve all been asking ourselves the same question: is he the right man for the job?
Before we go any further, let’s be clear on one thing. We love all things Henry Cavill. While girls fall for his flawless good looks, guys envy him, not only for his impressive physique, but also that effortless superhero, ‘Don’t worry I’ll save you’, vibe he’s got going on.
Yep, there’s no denying he’s a looker. If for some unknown reason you weren’t already convinced when he appeared head to toe in a skintight superhero costume playing Superman in the 2013 D.C. Comics hit Man of Steel, those dapper Dunhill campaigns ought to have done it. Indeed, just like Christian Grey, any Fifty Shades billionaire businessman needs to appear handsome, charismatic and charming, three things we can safely say Mr. Cavill has down.
On the other hand, we mustn’t forget that Hyde is Grey’s arch enemy and needs to have that streak of determination about him in order to try and win Anastasia’s affections. That being the case, how more determined can you get than the world’s favourite superhero, committed to fend off all evil for the good of mankind?
Also who is Christian Grey compared to the formidable General Dru-Zod Cavill had to face as Superman? He sure would be a good match for Jamie Dornan and let’s face it, with two such gorgeous acting specimens on screen at the same time, female audiences aren’t likely to complain…
But as much as we love Mr. Cavill, would he really be right for the part? After all we’re used to seeing the British actor playing the good guy and as those who have read Fifty Shades Darker will know, Jack Hyde is ultimately one hell of a bad guy, blackmailing Ana into sleeping with him while making all sorts of unwanted sexual advances.
Also, despite his being mega rich and owning his own publishing company, Jack Hyde is no superhero. Nu-uh, no superhuman powers in this film, so will there be enough action for Cavill to contend with if he was to be cast for Fifty Shades? On top of that, there’s more practical reasons why he still might not be chosen. Although filming has finished for his two most recent commitments,
The Man from U.N.C.L.E and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he will still be doing promotional stuff all the way through next year and with filming for Fifty Shades Darker supposedly due to start in early 2016, will he have too much on his plate?
Okay he might be Superman, but can he really do all that at once? Well, you’ll have to keep your ears and eyes open for all the latest updates, but here’s hoping! What do you think, would Henry Cavill make the perfect Jack Hyde?
